Fortunately, there are a lot of natural deodorants available now but I found that many did not work as well as the chemical laden stuff and the majority of them were extremely irritating on my skin because it contained baking soda. While baking soda is great for odor control, it is very harsh on the skin and can cause rashes and endless itching. The “sensitive” versions that used the tiniest amount of baking soda would work for a few weeks but eventually the irritation and discomfort came back (along with some discoloration / pigmentation – ugh!).
Those “natural crystal” deodorants work well but I learned that they contain aluminum under the guise of “ammonium alum” and “potassium alum” which are compounds made up of aluminum sulfate bonded to either potassium or ammonium.
Because I did not want to go back to cancer causing deodorants, I was encouraged to make my own. In addition to avoiding chemicals and synthetic fragrances, I also wanted to avoid baking soda because it is so irritating to the skin, and coconut oil because I found that it left stains on clothing.
After over a year of experimentation and testing, I came up with something that is not only chemical free and effective, but is actually beneficial to your skin and body.
This was developed with sensitive skin in mind and we are happy to report that this can be applied on sensitive, recently shaven, even broken skin without causing any irritation. It contains magnesium, rose water, witch hazel, Himalayan pink salt, and essential oils. These ingredients work together to neutralize odor and are actually good for your body when absorbed!
NOTE: We believe in using the best ingredients naturally available so we always opt for food-grade and organic when available. Our products are also vegan and cruelty free (never tested on animals).
Magnesium – In addition to blocking odor, magnesium is an essential mineral for over 300 enzyme driven reactions in the human body (including energy production, detoxification, protein synthesis, relaxing muscles, supporting a healthy immune system, regulating blood sugar levels, and maintaining strong bones and healthy teeth by aiding calcium absorption).
*food-grade, safe for oral consumption
Witch hazel – A natural astringent with antibacterial properties which helps to clean your pores as well as kill odor-causing bacteria. It contains tannins which help soothe irritated and inflamed skin.
*organic, alcohol free
Rose water – A moderate astringent with anti-inflammatory properties which helps balance the skin’s pH, clean out pores, soothes irritated skin, and tightens pores. It is also antiseptic so it cuts down on bacterial growth with regular use. Rose water is great for all sensitive, irritated, dry, and even oily skin.
Himalayan pink salt – Naturally rich in over 80 nourishing and skin-replenishing minerals. Through osmosis, pink salt helps eliminate toxins from your body.
*food-grade, safe for oral consumption
Essential oils – Essential oils are very potent and lend powerful benefits so it is added for slight scent but not enough to linger and compete with your perfume, cologne, lotion, cream, or moisturizer. The essential oils we use have incredible antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, and antiseptic properties.
*therapeutic grade, steam distilled (NEVER solvent extracted). organic when available and noted on individual product listings.
I’ve tested this on friends, family, and kind gym buddies brave enough to ditch the chemical stuff after I talked their ears off about the dangers of all the chemicals they were rubbing onto their skin daily. I have used it for boot camp classes, high intensity zumba, a 2 hour spin-a-thon, a full day hike in the middle of summer, and an overnight camping trip (it lasted 48 hours without reapplication!).
Please note: this is not an antiperspirant. Your body needs to perspire, and as much as we hate it, it is crucial in ridding the body of toxins. If you are not used to an all natural deodorant your body might go through a short detox period and you will sweat out the toxins. You may notice that you might be sweating a little more and with more odor than usual. This is completely normal, and is just your body’s way of detoxing all of toxins and chemicals from your body that were being trapped inside due to the use of commercial aluminum antiperspirants. Give yourself a few weeks to adjust, and for the product to reach maximum effectiveness.
